Hey yee ling! I think this question pertains more to the girls haha.. I was wondering if we'll be doing a lot of walking in philly? (like walk to sch, to subway, to work etc etc etc) cuz then I'd pack more comfy shoes and less heels and stuff =) oh yah, it won't really be acceptable to wear slippers/flats to work would it?whats the staple(comfy) footwear to get u almost everywhere? haha.. thanks man =))

Hi Xiaoqing, it's up to you to walk or take the public transport in Philly but it's US$1.45 per trip (bus/subway). We usually walk if the place is just like 10 streets away or less. Don't bring too many heels as the roads here are uneven and hard to walk in heels. I'm not sure about your company's policy but mine is cool with dressing casual for work. Ask the other intern at your company to find out. The staple footwear for summer I guess is sandals? Haha those that are comfy and long lasting... Don't worry about shoes, you can always get affordable ones easily here!

Check with your boss on what constitutes appropriate work wear, some of you may end up dressing up everyday, while others have a more informal work environment. I go to work in shorts an slippers! In summer and spring that is.

I'll add the perspective of an employer to this.

While startups are generally casual (not even business casual), the line of how casual can you go really depends on the company. A polite question to ask your prospective employer would be "If you have casual dress code, do you mind sandals and shorts?".

I do think that is as crude as you should get.

And the answer for Orbius is YES! Shorts, T-shirts and Sandals are fine UNLESS You are meeting a client.

If you would get on a CROWDED  bus (which you won't in a speedo swim trunk or a open belly tank top), it is generally acceptable.

Hopefully, this gives you some clue of How to ask. All companies are different. I haev worked at a company where the CEO PREFERS that no shorts or non-collared T-shirts be worn. Just have to respect his preference.

C.H.

Welcome!
